International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Councilors of the 14th convocation of the Children’s City Council of Opatija visited the Rijeka Education Center today with their mentors Sanja Škorić, Antonia Katić and Antonija Nikolić, and the occasion was the celebration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

In the Center for Education, together with the students, the members of the student council were welcomed by the school principal Ivone Šabarić Rubeša.

The representatives of the student council presented their school to the councilors of the 14th convocation of the Children’s City Council Opatija, and the child mayor Lana Golubović greeted the students and staff of the school on behalf of CCC Opatija, which was followed by a tour of the school.

Topic of mandate the 14th convocation of the Children’s City Council is “I give you my hands – joint activities with children with developmental disabilities!” whose goal is to advocate the rights and needs of children with developmental disabilities and disabilities and their families.

At the Society “Our children” Opatija for more than 20 years, the playroom “Hummingbirds” has been operating for children with developmental disabilities, in which more than 70 children from Liburnia are involved.

The work of our playroom workshop “Hummingbirds” is financially supported by the Ministry of Labour, Pension System, Family and Social Policy through the project “Hummingbirds squared” and Primorje Goranska County through the project “Hummingbirds plus”.

The funds obtained through these projects are aimed at ensuring the work of external professional associates of psychologists, educational rehabilitators, sensory therapists, social pedagogues, speech therapists and pedagogues, procurement of consumables for the implementation of workshops and the purchase of some didactic equipment.

Society “Our children” Opatija is one of the few associations that provides financial resources for the work of professional staff by applying for tenders, thus providing all the services it provides to children free of charge.

Part of the children involved in our “Hummingbirds” attend the Center for Education and that was one of the reasons for visiting this school.

We were especially pleased with the reaction of our Hummingbirds and the meeting with them at school, which ended with the joint song “When you are happy”.

Marking such important dates for life in the community is very important because in this way we advocate social changes that encourage in local communities to ensure the availability of the rights contained in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child to every child. Advocating for equal opportunities for all children, regardless of biological and psychosocial differences, is our goal and task.
